Construction Site Sanitation: OSHA Requirements and Best Practices

If you’re running a construction site in South Carolina, portable restroom compliance isn’t optional — it’s OSHA-mandated. Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and keep your crew productive.

OSHA Requirements at a Glance

OSHA’s sanitation standards for construction sites (29 CFR 1926.51) require toilet facilities for all workers. The minimums are clear:

  • 1-15 workers: 1 toilet facility
  • 16-35 workers: 2 toilet facilities
  • 36-55 workers: 3 toilet facilities
  • 56-80 workers: 4 toilet facilities
  • 81-110 workers: 5 toilet facilities

For sites with 11 or more workers where transport to fixed facilities is not feasible, portable restrooms are the solution.

Placement and Maintenance

Units should be placed within reasonable proximity to the work area — OSHA recommends no more than a 10-minute travel time from any work location on the site. Units must be maintained in a sanitary condition through regular cleaning and servicing.

Green Port-a-Jon offers weekly service contracts for construction sites that include waste removal, cleaning, restocking of supplies, and hand sanitizer refill. We also offer more frequent servicing for larger crews or active summer schedules.

Long-Term vs. Short-Term Rentals

For projects spanning multiple months, our long-term rental rates provide significant savings over month-to-month pricing. We also offer holding tank solutions for sites where pump truck access is limited or where you need extended capacity between service calls.
